Patent Claim Charting Services

Turn patent claims into actionable infringement evidence

Element-by-element claim charts backed by real product evidence

IIPRD provides patent claim charting services for patent owners, law firms, corporate IP teams, and litigation teams. A claim chart gives a structured, element-by-element comparison between the limitations of a patent claim and the features, functions, or technical evidence of a potentially infringing product or process. Our methodology combines claim interpretation, prosecution history review, product analysis, source code review, standards mapping, teardown, and reverse engineering, matched to the technology and the evidence available.

What it is

What is a patent claim chart?

A feature-by-feature mapping of a patent claim against a potentially infringing product, process, technology, or technical standard.

The chart determines whether the identified product appears to contain each individual limitation of the asserted claim, and it captures the supporting evidence for every limitation in one organized place.

A well-prepared chart requires both a technical understanding of the patented invention and detailed knowledge of the accused product, which is why manual mapping sits at the center of our work.

Evidence generation

Six ways we build the evidence

We start with what the manufacturer publishes, then reach deeper where a claim element is not visible from documentation alone.

01

Direct product references

Manuals, datasheets, specifications, brochures, product pages, white papers, and disclosures, with source and date checked.

02

Indirect technical references

When a feature is not stated, we reason from functionality, architecture, and input and output behavior to infer the claimed element.

03

Technical standard mapping

For SEPs, claims are mapped against the relevant standard to show which portions correspond to each claim element.

04

Source code review

For software inventions, we analyze algorithms, data flows, processing logic, and modules that documentation cannot reveal.

05

Product teardown analysis

For mechanical and hardware inventions, disassembly reveals internal components and structures for claim mapping.

06

Semiconductor reverse engineering

For chip-level claims, layer-by-layer analysis maps device structures and processes against the claims.

Standard essential patents

Standards mapping chain

For standardized technologies, we connect the claim to the standard to the product to show the essentiality link.

Function, way, result test

Where a product does not literally meet an element, we consider whether a substitute performs substantially the same:

Technology domains

Claim charting across technologies

Charting teams matched to the technology, from chip structures to mechanical assemblies.

Semiconductors

Devices, IC architecture, chip structures, fabrication processes, packaging, memory, and processors.

Telecommunications & SEP

4G/5G/6G, Wi-Fi, RF and mmWave, networking, protocols, and standard essential patents.

Software & AI

Algorithms, computer-implemented inventions, machine learning, data processing, and cloud technologies.

Automotive

ADAS, autonomous driving, vehicle electronics, connected vehicles, EV, and battery management.

Electronics & consumer products

Electronic devices, sensors, displays, imaging, wearables, and consumer electronics.

Mechanical technologies

Mechanical systems, devices, assemblies, components, and industrial equipment.

Litigation & enforcement

A technical foundation for enforcement

A well-prepared chart shows which claim elements are supported by evidence and where further technical investigation is needed, before you commit to enforcement.

How it works

Patent claim charting workflow

Nine steps from patent review to a structured, evidence-backed claim chart.

01

Patent review

Understand the patent, claims, specification, drawings, and prosecution history.

02

Claim selection

Identify the relevant independent and dependent claims for analysis.

03

Technology analysis

Understand the technical concepts and application areas the claims cover.

04

Target identification

Identify potentially relevant companies, products, processes, or technologies.

05

Evidence collection

Collect direct and indirect technical evidence from relevant sources.

06

Element-by-element mapping

Map each claim limitation against the identified product or technology.

07

Technical validation

Standards mapping, source code review, teardown, or reverse engineering where required.

08

Expert review

Review the chart for technical consistency, evidence quality, and mapping logic.

09

Final claim chart

Deliver a structured chart with supporting evidence and technical analysis.

Chart types

The right chart for the objective

Charts are scoped by how deep the investigation goes and what they are mapped against.

By depth

Quick claim chart

Selected claims and readily available evidence for an initial infringement read.

Detailed claim chart

Comprehensive element-by-element mapping with evidence, explanations, and references.

Litigation-ready chart

Deeper analysis for enforcement and litigation, with extensive evidence and investigation.

By focus

Standard-based chart

Claim mapping against a relevant technical standard for SEP and standards analysis.

Product-based chart

Detailed mapping against a specific product, product version, or product family.

Deliverables

What you receive

The mapping and its evidence, packaged for analysis, review, or a courtroom.

Excel claim chart

Element-by-element mapping with evidence, sources, analysis, and conclusions.

Word report

Detailed charting report with supporting technical analysis and methodology.

PowerPoint summary

Executive view of claims, targets, key mapping findings, and evidence.

Evidence repository

Supporting documents, references, screenshots, and publications, systematically organized.

Why IIPRD

Why choose IIPRD for patent claim charting?

A strong chart does more than place claim language beside product information. It builds a defensible technical connection, element by element.

Patent + technical expertise

Claim charting that combines patent analysis with technical understanding of the technology.

Manual element-by-element mapping

Each element is reviewed individually, not just automated claim similarity.

Product-focused analysis

We analyze actual products, features, documentation, and implementation evidence.

Advanced technical investigation

Source code review, standards mapping, teardown, and semiconductor reverse engineering when needed.

Prosecution history review

We weigh amendments, arguments, and the scope of the granted claims.

Litigation & licensing support

Charts that support infringement analysis, enforcement, licensing, and monetization.
