International Patent Drafting Competition (IPDC)
For over 10 years, IIPRD in collaboration with Khurana & Khurana IP Attorneys, has championed the International Patent Drafting Competition (IPDC). This premier initiative has evolved into a global benchmark, drawing participation from thousands of practitioners, including students, scientists, and legal professionals across diverse technical domains like Electronics, Mechanical, and Pharmaceuticals. By awarding significant monetary prizes—with First Prizes reaching ₹1,00,000—the competition does more than just reward excellence; it serves as a critical catalyst for promoting Patent Drafting as a vital professional competency. This initiative bridges the gap between technical innovation and legal protection, encouraging engineers and researchers to view precise drafting as a high-level skill set essential for the modern IP ecosystem. Ultimately, the IPDC plays a pivotal role in identifying the country’s top drafting talent while fostering a culture of quality and rigor that is indispensable for enforceable patent protection and successful commercialization. Be sure to watch this space and the official IIPRD website for announcements regarding the upcoming edition of the competition.

What is IPDC, its Purpose and Mandate
Celebrating a decade of excellence, the International Patent Drafting Competition (IPDC) is a prestigious 10-year initiative pioneered by IIPRD and Khurana & Khurana IP Attorneys (K&K). This initiative was established to foster a deeper awareness and respect for Intellectual Property (IP) rights, specifically focusing on Patents, which have become a cornerstone of the modern Indian economic and legal landscape.
Mission of the IPDC
The IPDC represents an earnest effort to elevate Patent Drafting from a task to a high-level Professional Competency. By identifying and rewarding the top patent drafters in the country, IIPRD and K&K aim to encourage scientists, engineers, and legal practitioners to master this niche skill set, ensuring that Indian innovations are protected by world-class standards.
Modus-Operandi of Conducting IPDC
The International Patent Drafting Competition follows a structured three-step process designed to challenge and reward the technical and legal acumen of the participants:
Step 1:
Release of Invention Disclosures IIPRD and K&K release two distinct Invention Disclosures on their official websites (www.iiprd.com and www.khuranaandkhurana.com). These disclosures cover two primary domains: Life Sciences and Engineering. Eligible participants are tasked with drafting a Complete Patent Specification (including claims and drawings) that complies with the Indian Patent Act for the technical domain of their choice.
Step 2:
Registration and Fee Submission To ensure a high standard of entries from committed professionals and students, a nominal participation fee of Rs. 500/- is required. Payments can be made via Bank Transfer, PayTM/GooglePay (to 9810617992), or through a Cheque/DD in favor of “IIPRD”. Each submission must include the participant’s Name, Address, and Contact Details to ensure the delivery of a Participation Certificate to every entrant.
Step 3:
Submission of Drafts Completed Patent Applications can be submitted digitally to [email protected] or sent as a hard copy to the IIPRD Physical Office at “D-45, UPSIDC, Site-IV, Kasna Road, Greater Noida”. Submissions must be received by the official closing date announced for the current cycle to be eligible for evaluation and the subsequent monetary prizes.
Winner Declaration and Evaluation Criteria
Following the evaluation period, the winners are announced on the websites of IIPRD, K&K, and their affiliates. The selection process is rigorous, with winners decided based on a comprehensive set of criteria, including the logical flow of the specification, the breadth of scope covered through embodiments, the sophistication of the claim drafting strategy, and the overall accuracy of technical coverage.
A distinguished panel from Khurana & Khurana, IP Attorneys, coordinated by IIPRD, conducts the evaluation collectively. To maintain the integrity of the competition, their collective decision on the selection of winners is final and binding. The competition offers significant financial incentives to recognize excellence, with prize money distributed as follows:
Award Structure
| Category | Prize Amount |
| First Prize | ₹1,00,000 |
| Second Prize | ₹50,000 |
| Third Prize | ₹25,000 |
Eligibility Criteria
The competition is designed to be inclusive, welcoming any individual with a strong foundation in science or technology. Any practitioner having a Technical or Science background is eligible to participate. This broad eligibility criterion ensures a diverse competitive landscape, where participants may include:
